DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL FUNDRAISER

On Sunday 18th September leaders from Girlguiding PEACEHAVEN AND NEWICK formed part of the crew who took part in the Fundraisers Dragon Boat Festival on Bewl Water, Lamberhurst. The Girlguiding members joined with some Soroptomist members to form a 20 strong ‘SIGGS’crew.  The “SIGGS” crew included Sylvia King, Vicki Faulkner, Debbie Attwater all from Girlguiding Peacehaven and from Girlguiding Newick; Anita Chamberlain, Helen Cooper, Jo Kidd, Georgia Barton. There was also a special crew member for 2 of the races Georgia Kidd who spurred the ladies on as the crew drummer.

For a first time Dragon Boating the crew did amazingly well. In the first race they managed a time of 2.07 minutes, the second race they bettered this with a time of 1.53 and in the last race they surpassed themselves and did the course in 1.44 minutes.

The “SIGGS” crew raised £2,000 to be equally shared between Cancer Research UK, Pestalozzi International Village Trust at Sedlescombe and Girlguiding Sussex East.

Soroptimist and team captain Anne Hudson said  “This joint venture with the older Guides and Soroptimists from across the South East Region follows a request by Liz Morgan Lewis, Federation President, to foster links and encourage young women to achieve their full potential.”

The Dragon Boat Festival organised by Funraisers is an annual fundraising event. Look out for details next year as we are hoping to have an all Girlguiding crew.
